“Mommy when I grow up, I wanna be a business broker!” Never has any child uttered those words as they walked by the local broker’s office, pressed their face up against the window, and dreamed of taking their first listing. In 1997, I was on the hunt to buy a business, and was taken aback by the state of the profession. The brokers I met lacked professionalism and transparency, consistently provided inaccurate information and utilized no technology. I walked away from each experience feeling like I had narrowly escaped death-by-sleazy-used-car-salesman. I realized that I was more fascinated with how businesses function and more interested in analyzing financials than actually purchasing a business. I knew I could serve clients better and execute at a higher level. The rest, as they say, is history. 600+ transactions later I can say if it’s out there, I’ve probably sold one.
